The Best Rocking Camping Chairs

Six folding rockers for the campfire, from about $70 to about $130. Most rock on springs, so they work on grass, and each one comes with the part that wears out first.

Rocking by the fire usually takes a porch. The GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker does it on a grassy campsite, for about $80, because the rocking happens in shock absorbers behind the seat rather than on curved runners. Its feet stay planted on uneven ground, the seat sits about 19 inches up, and it opens in two moves.

Weigh more than 250 pounds? The Freestyle XL is the same chair rated to 400. The Stowaway folds to three and a half inches thick for a crowded trunk, and the Kickback, about $70, is the cheapest GCI here, low and laid back. For real cushions, there's the Portal. Hiking in? Press the Rocking Feet onto a Helinox Chair One.

GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker

GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker

Rocks on springs instead of curved runners, so it works on grass and uneven ground, with a seat about 19 inches up.

Spring rockers, feet stay plantedSeat about 19 in upPadded armrests, cup holder3-year warranty

Why I picked it

The rocking happens in shock absorbers at the back of the frame, so the feet never leave the ground. Lean back and the seat gives a little; lean forward and it brings you up. That's what lets it rock on a lumpy site with roots under the grass, and keeps it from carving grooves in the sand. You sit upright, with a mesh back that breathes on a warm evening and a cup holder by your hand.

The seat is about 19 inches off the ground, the height of a dining chair, so you're up in one move after an hour by the fire. GCI rates it to 250 pounds on a steel frame, and it weighs about 12. Grab the seat frame and push it out and down to open it; to close it, put a foot on the base and pull the handle up.

Who it is for

It's the chair for car campers, and for kids' games where you'll sit two hours. Above 250 pounds, the XL is the one. And plan for the space: it folds flat but wide, about 25 by 35 inches.

What owners report

The springs rarely let owners down. The fabric does. In unhappy reviews, the complaint that keeps coming back is a seat or back that tears, rots or fades within one or two seasons, often on chairs stored indoors. It's riveted to the frame, GCI doesn't sell replacement fabric, and the 3-year warranty leaves out wear, sun and tears, so let the chair dry before you fold it and keep it out of the sun between trips. A smaller group had a weld crack near an armrest or at the bar behind the back: a family with five of these saw every one break at that bar, each time tipping its occupant backward.

The short seat bothers people of every height. A woman of five feet found the front edge four or five inches behind her knees, and her husband, a foot taller, wasn't better off. Then there's the squeak. One review team heard it after a week of sand and rain, and washing and greasing the shocks cured it. GCI's own fix is a silicone spray where the frame meets the lower leg, then around the top of each shock; a click instead of a squeak means a bolt to tighten.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • The fabric is the first thing to go, and it can't be replaced.
  • Folds flat but wide, about 25 by 35 inches.
  • The seat is shallow front to back.

GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker XL

GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker XL

The same rocker two inches wider, rated to 400 lb, with a phone pocket, for about $5 more.

Rated to 400 lb2 in wider than the FreestylePhone pocket3-year warranty
+Read the full write-up

Why I picked it

Two extra inches of width, a phone pocket and a 400-pound rating, for about $5 more than the Freestyle. The springs, the 19 to 20 inch seat and the fold stay the same, so all you give up is about a pound. If you've ever felt a camp chair flex under you, the extra margin is worth five dollars.

Who it is for

People over 250 pounds, and anyone who likes room to shift sideways. One owner calls it ideal for older people, who find the high seat easy to leave. Under 250 pounds, the standard Freestyle saves a little money and weight.

What owners report

Its weak spot is the fabric at the top of the backrest, where the tubes press against it, and that complaint comes up far more than any other. A Texas buyer's two XLs tore in the sun within eighteen months, frames untouched. When the back lets go, the sitter goes with it, and a handful fell backward. One owner of two XLs had one tear five inches after about six trips, then the back of the other gave way. A few heard a shock squeak, one from the second day, and a woman of five foot six still found the seat too short.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • The fabric tends to tear at the top of the back.
  • Same shallow seat as the Freestyle.
  • About 13 lb, and wide when folded.

GCI Outdoor Stowaway Rocker

GCI Outdoor Stowaway Rocker

Folds to 3.5 inches thick and 28 inches tall, the slimmest GCI rocker, and holds 300 lb.

+Read the full write-up

Why I picked it

Folded, the Stowaway is 3.5 inches thick and 28 inches tall, which GCI says is 35 percent more compact than its standard rocker. It slides between a cooler and the side of the trunk where a Freestyle won't. It still rocks on springs, the seat sits 19.5 inches up, and it's rated to 300 pounds, 50 more than the Freestyle.

It costs about $90 and weighs 13.9 pounds, about two more than the Freestyle.

Who it is for

Families packing four chairs and a week of gear into one car, and people between 250 and 300 pounds who want something slimmer than the XL. With room to spare, the Freestyle costs less and weighs less.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • About 2 lb heavier than the Freestyle.
  • Costs about $10 more.

GCI Outdoor Kickback Rocker

+Read the full write-up

Why I picked it

Here the seat drops to about 16 or 17 inches and tips you back against a taller mesh backrest, more beach chair than dining chair. It rocks on springs like the Freestyle, costs about $70 and weighs 10.6 pounds, the lightest GCI chair in this guide.

It folds differently too: into a long bundle about 6 by 8 inches and 39 inches long, with a strap to hold it shut and another to sling it over your shoulder, which leaves your hands for the cooler.

Who it is for

Shorter campers, and anyone who likes to stretch their legs toward the fire. If low seats bother your knees, take the Freestyle: GCI lists it about two inches higher.

What owners report

Height divides owners. One of five foot three found it just right and too low for a six-foot-two husband, and measured it closer to six inches below their Freestyle, odd next to regular chairs in a circle. About ten unhappy reviews say it's hard to get out of, and one buyer can't stand up without help. The fabric armrests fray along the edges, a cup holder tore off, and one armrest had a hole within two months. One owner had the folding mechanism break on two chairs within a year. Same springs, same squeak: one camper's neighbors asked them to stop rocking.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Low seat, hard to get out of.
  • Fabric armrests and cup holder fray.
  • The folding mechanism can break.

Why I picked it

Cushions are the point: a padded seat and a padded high back, on a steel frame that rocks on a curved base like a porch chair. The armrests are hard, so you have something solid to push on when you stand, and the seat sits 19.5 inches off the ground. Portal rates it to 400 pounds.

That comfort weighs 16.5 pounds, the most here. It folds into a bundle about 40 inches long and goes into a carry bag with a strap. About $95.

Who it is for

Big people who want padding, cool evenings when mesh feels cold, and campsites with a deck, a patio or packed dirt. A curved base needs flat, firm ground to rock well, so on a beach or a soft lawn, the spring-loaded Freestyle XL is the better 400-pound chair.

What owners report

Few buyers have written about it or its near twins, so take these as individual stories. Two mentioned the height: a petite owner struggles to get up, her feet off the ground, while another bought it for exactly that high seat. A buyer of six foot five and 265 pounds found it solid, with armrests a bit short to push up from. Two felt it might tip backward at first; one got used to it, and a mother says her daughter couldn't tip it even while holding a baby. Two found it heavy.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • 16.5 lb, the heaviest here.
  • Needs flat, firm ground to rock.

Helinox Rocking Feet for Chair One

A pair of runners that press onto the Helinox Chair One and turn a 2 lb backpacking chair into a rocker.

About 1 lb for the pairPress on, no toolsStops the chair sinking in sand5-year warranty
+Read the full write-up

Why I picked it

A Helinox Chair One weighs about 2 pounds and holds 320. Press these runners onto its four feet, no tools needed, and it rocks, for about a pound more. Nothing else in this guide goes in a backpack. The chair costs about $77 and the runners about $52, so about $130 together.

The runners help on soft ground too. The Chair One's narrow feet sink into sand and dirt, and the runners spread the load so the chair stays on top. Get the pair made for your chair: these fit the original Chair One, not the newer Chair One (re).

Who it is for

Backpackers and paddlers, and anyone camping a long walk from the car. The chair is the top pick in my guide to lightweight camping chairs, so if you already own one, about $52 makes it a rocker. With the car close by, a Freestyle is far more comfortable.

What owners report

Beach campers are the happiest: the chair stops sinking, and the extra weight keeps an empty chair from blowing away. The complaints, across Helinox's runner models, are about the motion. Several buyers say the runners tip them slightly forward at rest and stop the rock short, and on grass a few felt the chair roll forward. Two had runners pop off, since they only press on: one rocked too far back, the runners came off and the chair collapsed, twice. Rock gently.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Short rock that tips you forward at rest.
  • Runners only press on, and can pop off.
  • Low seat, about 9 inches before the runners.

Who this is for

All six are for sitting by the fire, and five of them weigh 10 to 17 pounds, so they ride in the car. If you'd rather not rock, our guide to the best camping chairs has a padded seat rated to 800 pounds and one that swings and reclines. And to eat from one of these, the folding camping tables guide has tables low enough for a 19-inch seat.

How to choose

Springs or curved runners?

Springs, as on the GCI chairs, do the rocking with the feet planted, so they work on grass and uneven ground and keep still when you lean forward to eat. A curved base like the Portal's rocks like a porch chair but wants flat, firm ground. The Helinox runners are the exception: on a light chair, they keep it from sinking in sand. For a campsite you haven't seen, get springs.

How much weight does it need to hold?

The Freestyle and the Kickback are rated to 250 pounds, the Stowaway to 300, the Freestyle XL and the Portal to 400. Pick one with room to spare above your weight, since a rocker moves under you all evening.

Will your knees like it?

Seat height decides how easily you get up. The Freestyle, the Stowaway and the Portal sit 19 to 20 inches up, about dining-chair height. The Kickback sits lower and leans back, and the Chair One is lower still. If low seats bother your knees, stay near 19 inches.

How does it fit in the car?

The Freestyle and the XL fold into a flat slab about 25 by 35 inches, easy to slide in but it takes a lot of room. The Stowaway is a thinner slab, 3.5 inches. The Kickback and the Portal fold into long bundles instead, and the Chair One goes in a 14-inch sack.

The competition

Five rockers that come up a lot, and the catch with each.

GCI Outdoor RoadTrip Rocker

A Freestyle with a carry bag and a slightly higher seat, about $90. That's about $10 more for the bag, with the same fabric.

Coleman Pro Rocker

A spring rocker rated to the same 250 pounds as the Freestyle, at about the same price, about $70 to $90. The GCI is the one more owners have lived with for years.

NEMO Stargaze EVO-X

A seat that swings from a frame and tips back, about $135. More lounger than rocker, and it's in our camping chairs guide.

ALPS Mountaineering Rocking Chair

Rated to 300 pounds, like the Stowaway, but about 17.5 pounds to carry.

Ozark Trail Tension 2-in-1 Rocking Chair

A budget rocker from Walmart that weighs 17.5 pounds, heavier than any GCI here.

How we picked

Rocks on real campsitesRated for 250 lb or moreSeat height publishedFolds to carrySold on Amazon

I started with thirty-one rockers, from runners at about $52 to chairs around $145. What you read about wear comes from owner reviews posted on GCI's and Portal's own sites and shown on Target's product pages, from Helinox buyers, and from more than a year of use by the team at CleverHiker. Weights, ratings, seat heights and folded sizes are mostly the makers' figures, with the store listing where the maker publishes none.

Common questions

What is the best rocking camping chair?+

For most people, the Freestyle. It rocks on springs, so it works on grass and uneven ground, sits about 19 inches up and costs about $80. If you weigh more than 250 pounds, take the Freestyle XL.

Are rocking camping chairs worth it?+

If you sit by the fire for hours, they're a treat, and a spring rocker costs about what a good regular camp chair does. They weigh around 12 pounds and fold big, so they belong in the car, not in a pack.

What is the best collapsible rocking chair for camping?+

The Stowaway folds the thinnest, 3.5 inches thick. For a rocker you can carry in a pack, press the Rocking Feet onto a Helinox Chair One: about 3 pounds together.

How do I stop a GCI rocker from squeaking?+

Spray silicone where the frame meets the lower leg, then around the top of each shock absorber. That's GCI's own fix. If it clicks instead, tighten the bolts. Sand and rain make it worse, so rinse the shocks after a beach trip and let the chair dry before you fold it.

Are there replacement parts for GCI rocker chairs?+

Mostly no. GCI doesn't sell most parts, and the fabric is riveted to the frame. The 3-year warranty covers defects but not wear, sun or tears, so let the chair dry fully before folding it.

The verdict

Buy the GCI Freestyle Rocker

It rocks where you camp, on grass and roots, and you can get out of it after an hour, for about $80. If it creaks under you, the Freestyle XL. For a packed trunk, the Stowaway, and for a long walk in, a Chair One on Rocking Feet.
